Improving America's Schools Conference

Recent research suggests that in order for professional development to be effective, it must be designed to address several important factors, such as educators' technology skills, teachers' and students' current uses of technology for teaching and learning, and overall school climate. The Technology Institute at the Improving America's Schools Conference in Washington, DC provided educators with innovative strategies for using data to design and plan effective professional development.  Review some of the presentations and resources used during the Institute.


Data with Stories and Stories with Data
Many school districts are facing loud calls for proof of results from the investments and efforts in technology. Educators are searching for tools and instruments to measure and document the impact of technology on teaching and learning. This presentation provides an overview on some of the online tools available to help educators collect data for documenting the impact of technology. This presentation is based on a reprint of an article from the April 1999 issue of T.H.E. Journal.
What the Research Says About Professional Development and Technology's Role
In this presentation, learn what we know about effective professional development and how teachers learn to use technology as a tool to support teaching and learning in the classroom. 
Developed by the High Plains Regional Technology in Education Consortium (HPR*TEC),  Profiler is an online tool designed to assist teachers and students cooperatively improve their skills around a general topic and to aid districts in their ability to share information and expertise.  To take a survey or view the library of surveys, visit the Profiler site.
Case Studies
Participants gained first-hand experience in planning professional development ground in data.  Working in small groups with facilitators and state-of-the-art technology, participants examined three case studies with real data as they collaborated to craft action plans that targeted identified needs. 
R*TEC Resources
