Southern LiterBEARy Portraits
Kate DiCamillo

Protrait submitted by students from St Mark's Episcopal School

Kate DiCamillo lived in the South for a lot of her childhood. She was born in Philadelphia. She came to Florida when she was about five years old. She got her bachelor's degree at the University of Florida.
She had a Newberry award-winning book called "Because of Winn-Dixie." She wrote it because she was in Minnesota and was homesick for the warmth in Florida. Also her apartment did not allow dogs so she wanted to write about her dog.
When she was an adult she was deeply influenced by Katherine Paterson, Karen Hesse, and Patricia MacLachlan. by Emily M.

Kate DICamillo was born in Philadelphia and moved south when she was 5 years old. She spent most of her time there, and got her masters degree at the University of Florida Gainesville. She grew up in a small town and that was what inspired her to write "because of Winn Dixie," she wrote it because she thought that everything was going away just like in the book. " Because of "Win n Dixie," was probably her most famous book so far. Kate DiCamillo thinks that the one thing more exciting than any award has been getting a letter from a young reader who said, "I loved your book.

Kate DiCamillo is a fantastic author who used to live in Florida. She grew up in Florida for a long time. Kate works at a bookstore near her apartment. Her daily routine is she gets up in the morning, has her cup of coffee, and then writes two pages. After she writes she goes and works at the bookstore. She loves to write for all ages. Right now she is working on a collection of short novels for adults and young adults. She is a lot busier than she used to be but she LOVES her work!
One of my favorite books that she wrote was called "Because of Winn-Dixie". She wrote this book when she was in Minnesota. Kate wrote it because she was longing for her home and a dog. "Because of Winn-Dixie" is about a girl who finds a dog in Winn-Dixie and gets to keep him. I liked this book because it was funny and exciting.
