NCHE Recorded Webinar: Supporting Unaccompanied Homeless Youth in Accessing Higher Education
This December 13, 2010, webinar, geared towards both the homeless education and higher education communities, will provide important information about FAFSA provisions allowing unaccompanied homeless youth to apply for federal financial aid for college as independent students. Topics include:
  • A brief primer on the McKinney-Vento Act and unaccompanied homeless youth
  • Determining independent student status for unaccompanied homeless youth filling out the FAFSA
  • Building community collaboration to support unaccompanied homeless college students

    Increasing Access to Higher Education for Unaccompanied Youth: Information for Colleges and Universities
    Many unaccompanied homeless youth have higher education aspirations, but find the barriers to enrollment and attendance to be overwhelming. This NCHE brief provides a better understanding of unaccompanied homeless youth and the educational and other challenges they face, a summary of federal education legislation that gives unaccompanied homeless youth access to important educational supports, and samples of promising practices implemented by high schools, colleges, and universities to assist unaccompanied homeless youth in succeeding in college.
